Anniversary side trip Part II: Cochem to Bernkastel-Kues

Yesterday morning we left the Alte Thorschenke in Cochem and continued west along the Mosel River...
This was our room in the inn, one of six with four-poster beds. The date 1798 was carved in the frame.
About 100 km to the west, we stopped in Bernkastel-Kues, twin towns spanning the river. The Bernkastel side features a medieval town square and many narrow streets like the one pictured above.

Here is the fountain, which actually flows with wine during harvest time in the fall. Bernkastel is one of the most important wine-growing towns in the area.

From the other side of the square.
Unlike Cochem, Bernkastel is fully restored and has a polished look, like Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria. It also was full of hundreds of people strolling around at 11:00 on a Friday morning in April.

I took this picture from the patio of a weinstube. Click on the picture to see the Riesling vines growing up the steep hillside towering over the town.
After an hour of exploring and a glass of Riesling, we left town and arrived in the surprisingly beautiful city of Trier.
